Ut queant laxis,
Resonare fibris,
Mira gestorum,
Famuli tuorum,
Solve polluti,
Labii reatum,
Sancte Joannes!
May be loosened,
Echo fibers,
The wonders of the
Your servants
solve the pollution
The guilt of the lips
Saint John!
An ancient text which, set to music, becomes the basis of what we recognize as the notes of the occidental major scale.
Really, a harmless accident rather than a calculated happenstance.
Each line is sung with one note until the last phrase which resolves itself to the next octave with a half step.
An whole step from "Ut" to "Re".
Another whole step from "Re" to "Mi".
An half step to "Fa" and an whole step to "Sol".
Whole steps to "La" and "Sa" followed by an half step to "Jo".
"Ut" became "Do", "Sa" became "Ti" and "Jo", which is the octave of "Do" assumed the title "Do" to reflect that direct relationship.
The poem connects the physics with the spirituality of Music.
If the operator of the instrument - the "servants" work the strings or "echo fibers" - this act will cleanse or purify the misdeeds of human behaviour.
Perhaps the ending of the poem is the verification or signature of Saint John himself!?
Whether or not this mythology is just that or a fact is a bit of a grey area at this point.
I personally believe that Music is a connector, a healer, and an important conduit for spirituality and the answers of the unknown.
But I guess that's my excuse for being a Musician.
